Prizegiving 2009 coming soon
There’s been a bit of a hiccup with prizegiving dates, but we can now announce that prizegiving will be on Friday 2nd October at The Hog on Hood Street. Sorry to those who have been told earlier dates, but we should now be able to celebrate with our Midlands players as well as giving more time to organise a fun evening.
Presentations will take place about 8pm, so come on down after work (or after class) and spend some quality time together with teammates and friends. Five dollars at the door will get you drink deals, finger food, prizes, good company and more. Hope to see you there!

Zip it up and zip it out
Spooni continued their good start to the championship round with a well deserved 3-0 victory over the Tesco’s Te Awamutu Timberwolves. For those of you with Epic Montage Media Player 5.0 please click on this link http://www.varsityho … .co.nz/epicmontage8” to see highlights of the first half to the sound of Megadeath’s Tornado of Souls. For those of you deprived of EMMP 5.0 all you have missed is 5 seconds of hockey followed by Tornado of Souls live in Edinburgh 1986. Only 5 seconds of footage was needed as Te A decided to play an 11 man defense within their own 25, leading to a 0-0 half time score line.
An inspirational half time talk by William ‘not Hung’ Harding mentioned how we needed to take shots and score which was actually referring to the after party later that night but none the less worked a treat. A PC early in the second half gave Nick ‘what’s wrong with Flame/White Man’s Tim’ Trebilcock a chance to display his experimental new PC move. Noting that the goalie’s right boot was placed at the perfect angle, instead of dragging low to the right post he decided to drag it straight at the goalies right foot knowing the ball would bounce 6.23m into the air and land precisely 2.34m from the top of the circle. Positioned perfectly Trebilcock then played a shot reminiscent of a Nathan Astle cover drive to give Spooni a 1-0 lead. Spooni continued to dominate proceedings with patient passing and good movement. Trebilcock continued his fine goal scoring form with another ‘experimental’ PC move paying dividends. Spooni then extended their lead to three with some slick passing resulting in Tim ‘Indian Man’s Nick’ Ranchodbai scoring a well executed reverse. Spooni’s 3-0 win sees them move clear on top of the table as the only unbeaten side.
In other news, a humurous fines session took place with all proceeds going to Nick’s TAB account. Thanks boys.

Gutsy Storage King notch up another win
After missing seven players for last weeks win over Te Awamutu, the Storage King girls were happy to have a full squad for this weeks clash against Suburbs. Although the pre-game warm-up and team talks were positive and enthusiastic, the students proceeded to play one of their worst halves of hockey this season. With a revamped and aggressive Suburbs side putting them under pressure, the Uni girls lost their structure and seemed to be playing with almost zero confidence. Subsequently ‘Burbs went into the break up 1-0 after a nice finish towards the end of the half.
However, after inspirational speeches from the coaching staff and Cat “Captain Fantastic” Bryan, Storage King returned to the field with a glint in their eye and a determination to, in the words of one player, “make Suburbs their bitch”. It was seemingly a completely different side that played that half. The passing was accurate, the ball movement swift, and the tackling dominant. The strikers and inners were repeatedly making scything attacks through the Suburbs defence, eventually culminating in a PC being awarded, which was neatly converted by Hannah “I play better when I’m hungover” Weir. The deficit dispatched, Varsity continued to dominate, converting some scrappy chances and playing much of the game in the opposition half. Up 3-1 with five minutes to go, the icing on the cake came with the conversion of a frankly amazing PC move, which left the Suburbs defenders dumbfounded with awe.
So a good win for Storage King (in the end), in which they showed some real guts and determination, both of which they will need in spades for next weeks grudge match against Old Girls (grrrr). The newly created Player of the Day award or “Best Dominatrix” went to Gabby Gardiner, who once again produced a classy and of course dominating performance.
